Mound Cemetery
Mound Cemetery was laid out in 1863. It was founded by John B. Hill. This cemetery is on a natural hill which overlooked the surrounding county for miles. It was also used by the Indians as a burial place before any white man ever saw it. Many bones and relics were found when the grading was done.
The driveways in this cemetery follow natural lines. This is the cattle-path idea of landscaping - following the easiest way. Our Sexton is very diligent on keeping these cemeteries beautiful and clean.
As of late 2016, there are over 9,900 burials in this cemetery, and the number will continue to rise, as this cemetery is not full. There are spaces still available for sale and use.
Roselawn Cemetery was established originally as an addition to Mound Cemetery. However, it was managed seperately from Mound Cemetery until the two were incorporated in 1992. Charleston Cemeteries, Inc. is the umbrella under which both cemeteries are run. As of 2016 there are over 5,000 burials in this cemetery and is far from capacity. Since this is the "newer part" of the cemetery, there are more available spaces for sale and use.
Charleston Cemeteries, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization and the 7-member Board of Directors meet monthly to discuss any changes and review the activities for the previous month.
The daily operations of the Cemetery are run by the Cemetery Manager, Jeremy Winkler, and the Office Manager, Donna Stewart. Our hours of operation are listed at the bottom of each page. We have a full-time staff of 3 during the spring through early winter months, that assist the Sexton with all landscaping and maintenance. We pride ourselves on keeping both cemeteries beautiful every day.
Sexton's hours are: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm
Secretary's hours are: Monday - Friday 9:00am-1:00pm
The office is closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
